Bulgarian nurses finally set free
After more than 8 years of imprisonment the five Bulgarian nurses and the Palestinian doctor who were accused of deliberately infecting more than 400 Libyan children with HIV were freed and arrived safely in Sofia. This incredible ordeal started back in 1999 when Muammar Qaddafi and his henchmen accused the medics of executing a plot put together by the CIA and the Israeli secret services. Typical for Qaddafi. This preposterous accusation later morphed into a clear-cut case of international extortion. The medics were sentenced to death by a firing squad, but pardon was readily available if Bulgaria, the EU, the US or anyone else with deep enough pockets was willing to pay up over 400 million dollars. Other undisclosed deals are supposed to be in the works as a condition for the final release. I am not sure we will ever get a clear picture of what exactly was traded behind the scenes for the lives of these six people.
